Where are the best surf spots in Perth though? Well, after living here all our lives and surfing our way around the city, we have a few recommendations.

How is the surf culture in Perth?

Despite not having world-class waves like Sydney or the Gold Coast, Perth has a thriving surf culture replete with surf shops and surf schools.

Surfing is deeply ingrained in our city's lifestyle and you'll often see people carrying their boards around town or heading to the beach after work. We've even spawned some professional surfers like Ian Cairns.

The community is also very welcoming to new surfers, so don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with fellow wave riders. Friendly locals abound, and meeting new people is part of the fun of surfing in Perth.

Can a beginner learn to surf in Perth?

Yes! Western Australia is blessed with a long coastline and plenty of beginner-friendly surf breaks.

Leighton Beach, Cottesloe Beach, Trigg Beach and Scarborough Beach are all great options for beginners.

If you're new to surfing, consider taking a lesson with a surf school located in the city (like us!). We've seen countless friendships form between our students as they learn to surf together and explore the city's beaches.

Do Perth's surf spots get crowded?

Because Perth CBD and its surf beaches are not as densely populated as other major cities, our surf spots tend to be less crowded.

Of course, during peak summer months and weekends, certain spots may see more people. But overall, you can usually find a spot to yourself or with just a few others at most of Perth's beaches.

South of Perth at Secret Harbour, Rockingham or Mandurah, you may find even fewer people, but these spots are also a bit further from the city centre.

Can you surf on Rottnest Island?

Rottnest Island sits in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Perth and is a popular tourist destination.

The island has over 63 beaches, some of which are great for surfing! The best time to surf on Rottnest Island is during the winter months when the Indian Ocean swells are bigger and more consistent.

Some popular surf spots on Rottnest include Strickland Bay, Salmon Bay and Stark Bay.

The best surf spots in Perth for all skill levels

Cottesloe Beach, Perth

Cottesloe Beach, affectionately known as “Cott” by locals, is not known for massive waves - a fact that may disappoint seasoned surfers but makes it an ideal spot for beginners.

Its gentle waves, combined with its stunning natural beauty, make it a popular destination for those learning to surf. Visitors flock to Cott not just for the waves but to admire its crystal-clear waters and pristine white sand, both of which have earned the beach its iconic reputation.

What makes Cott even more appealing for learners is its natural protection from southerly and southwest winds, providing a sheltered spot on blustery days.

Whether you're hitting the water for the first time or simply soaking in the scenery, this pretty beach break offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Scarborough Beach, Perth

Scarborough Beach is a favourite spot for beginner surfers seeking waves close to Perth's CBD.

It offers a convenient option for those eager to hit the surf. The beach relies on shifting sandbanks to form good waves, making conditions a bit unpredictable at times.

Thankfully, the team at Go Surf knows Scarborough like the back of their hand. We can guide you to the best waves any day of the week.

Known for its clean, punchy waves and fewer crowds, Leighton Beach is the go-to spot for those looking to escape the hustle and enjoy a solid surf session. Whether you're chasing green walls or just getting comfortable on your board, this hidden gem delivers during our winter season June - October.

Known for its ability to catch consistent southwest swells, this spot offers reliable surf throughout much of Perth’s winter season. It’s one of the reasons we frequent this beach during the cooler months.

While Leighton Beach may not deliver world-class surf, its charm lies in its approachable waves.

Leighton is perfect for those seeking punchy green walls or gentle whitewash. As such, it’s an ideal setting for beginners to hone their skills. Intermediate and advanced surfers might also score a few opportunities to enjoy themselves.

All in all, Leighton Beach balances accessibility with a touch of adventure, making it a must-visit for anyone eager to enjoy an inviting and beginner-friendly surf destination.

Brighton Beach, Perth

Discover the hidden gem of Perth’s surf scene—Brighton Beach, Scarborough. Less crowded than its famous neighbors, this summer surf spot offers great waves, chill vibes, and easy access to Scarborough’s post-surf cafés.

Brighton Beach, Scarborough – Perth’s best-kept surf secret. 🌊🏄‍♂️

Less crowded, more relaxed, and just as stunning as its famous neighbors, Brighton Beach is the ultimate summer surf spot. Whether you're here for the waves or just soaking up the good vibes, this hidden gem is all about easy-going sessions and smooth rides. Just a short stroll from Scarborough, it’s the perfect place to catch waves without the chaos.

Brighton Beach is our little secret (so shhh... don’t tell everyone).

While Scarborough and Trigg often soak up all the attention, Brighton’s over here doing its thing: less crowded, more chill and just as stunning.

It’s the underdog of summer surf spots and we’re all about it.

Brighton gives you all the waves without the chaos. Plus, you’re still close enough to Scarborough to soak up the vibes (and grab a post-surf smoothie).

Quiet, gorgeous, and oozing good energy, Brighton is where you go to ride waves and enjoy the best of Western Australia's famous weather.

Trigg Beach, Perth

Trigg Beach, located just north of the CBD, is one of the best surf spots in the area.

Stretching along a pristine expanse of white sand, it consistently catches a good amount of swell, making it a favorite among surfers.

At the northern end, a rocky outcrop offers more challenging waves in heavy swells, perfect for those transitioning from beginner to intermediate levels and beyond.

However, Trigg's popularity comes with a downside: it often gets crowded.

For this reason, we often head slightly further south for our Go Surf lessons, where the waves are just as inviting but with more room to enjoy them.

The Go Surf breakdown

Perth's waves tend to be forgiving for beginners, with lots of smaller-sized waves rolling in and plenty of space to practice.

And that's where we come in! Not to flex, but we're the most popular surf school in Perth by the numbers. We teach you not just how to surf, but also to understand the ocean, pick the best waves and stay safe in the water.

Our Go Surf crew all have their surf instructor certification, so you're well taken care of (no matter your level). A Perth trip or staycation just isn't complete without trying your hand at surfing, and we're ready to make it a memorable experience for you.
